Having the ability to work from home is such a blessing but working from home isn’t all fun and games. At the end of the day, it is still work, and figuring out how to make working from home work for you takes time. Since starting The Social Icing, I’ve exclusively been working from home. I’ve learned a thing or two over the last few years about what works and what doesn’t, and how to have a productive work day, even at home.
Whether you’re working from home for the first time, navigating a hybrid work schedule, or are learning how to work from home until you move into an office space, here are my tried and true tips for working fro home.
5 Tips for Working From Home
Have a Designated Work Space
When you work from home, one of the best things you can do for your productivity and motivation is having a designated space to work from. This will not only help you get more done but will give you a better work-life balance. If you live in a smaller space that cannot fit a full desk, that’s okay! Create a designated work space in your home, whether it’s at a table or small writing desk.
Give Time Blocking a Try
If you have a hard time jumping from task to task, give time blocking a try! By creating time blocks, you can focus on specific tasks and get them done faster because you’re not shifting your brain’s focus between tasks. When figuring out what to time block and for how long, consider each task you have to get done each day, how long it takes you to complete those tasks, and what times you’re most productive during.
Once you have that figured out, categorize each task you have to complete and block off time for for each category. You can do this on both a daily and weekly basis, which makes figuring out your most productive schedule easy.
Utilize Tools & Resources
Running a business is no easy feat and the best way to be successful at it is to utilize tools and resources that support your day-to-day tasks. Having these set up will make the day-to-day easier and will allow you more time to focus on the aspects of your business that you love. One of my favorites for managing tasks is ClickUp and I recommend it to everyone!

Have a Routine
By having a routine you follow each day, like you would if you were going into an office, it’ll be easier to get into the groove of working each day. Give youself time to get ready for the day, have a good breakfast, and get outside before sitting down for the day. Don’t forget to take a break for lunch and try to limit personal tasks as much as possible until you’re done with work tasks for the day.
The key is to avoid rolling out of bed and getting straight to work, you’ll never get into the right mindset for the day if you do this!
Find Balance
When you work from home, your work and personal life can easily blend together. Find ways to separate the two to give your days more balance. When you do this, you’ll be more productive and will enjoy working from home more than ever before.
